Welcome & the responsible-hunter mindset
Welcome. Whether you have never handled a firearm or you have spent years around them, you are joining a community that takes safety, respect for wildlife, and responsibility seriously. Hunting is a privilege, not a right — and it comes with real obligations to yourself, the people around you, landowners and other outdoor users, and the animals you pursue.
The single most important idea in this whole course is simple: a responsible hunter makes safety and good judgment automatic. The skilled hunters are not the ones who take risky shots or bend the rules. They are the ones who handle every firearm as if it were loaded, confirm their target before they ever touch the trigger, know the law and follow it, and would rather pass up an animal than make a careless mistake.
- Be safe — with your firearm, in the field, and in your planning.
- Be legal — know the rules and follow them, every time.
- Be ethical — practise fair chase, respect wildlife, take only responsible shots.
- Be a good ambassador — your conduct shapes how the public sees all hunters.
Keep those four in mind as you go — everything else in this course is really just the detail of how to live up to them. There's nothing to prove here yet; just read, take your time, and enjoy it.
